What I do as a writing coach

I help you writing your thesis or term paper by giving advice throughout this process.

Our cooperation starts with the topic and the research question. Then we turn to methods, literature research and writing.

We’re preparing your thesis defense, related presentations and oral exams.

Thesis coaching, exam coaching, presentation coaching: meaning and purpose.

First, coaching in this context means advice and guidance for writing a thesis or a term paper. It starts with defining together basic steps and milestones to be reached throughout the coaching process. This includes the topic and the goal of research, to be refined by a research concept which leads to a research question. The literature research follows. For this, as for the ensuing path of thesis writing, I am the interlocutor in terms of applying methods, writing style, keeping the research on track and ensuring progress. This prevents you from getting bogged down. I’m counting on over 15 years of successfully supporting students writing their theses.

Second, coaching comprises preparing for exams (both written and oral), presentations and defenses of theses: Helping you organize your knowledge, getting structure into a presentation and improving your ability of focusing on what is essential. Speaking convincingly in front of an audience enhances your self-esteem. An increase of oral exams and presentations can be expected in the future.

Coaching: the workflow

Coaching starts when you have agreed upon a topic or title. If you wish, we start while you’re still deliberating.

We start with a first meeting free of charge.

You decide when cooperation ends. No packages to be booked in advance.

In Berlin, meetings of at least one hour can also take place in person.

A good time to start is when the topic of a thesis has been agreed upon. But why not starting earlier? When you’re free or partly free to choose your topic, making good choices is paramount. Your workload throughout research and writing, like the quality of your thesis, are heavily influenced by how workable your topic is.
Before coaching starts, we have a session, free of charge, of about half an hour. This session serves to explore the options for cooperation and to get an outline on the coaching schedule.
Every successive session will be booked separately. It should be clear that every session is desired by the client. My key issue: Every session creates value. It’s you to decide when cooperation ends or if it will be extended. Reasons abound, one less reckoned with in the beginning is that you will be required to present and “defend” your results.

Remote or face-to-face

Coaching usually takes place via online communication tools, e.g., Zoom®. But it’s not necessarily remote. Even in Berlin, distances can be overcome, at least part of them. A personal encounter from time to time or only at the beginning can improve all exchanges during the coaching journey.

Fees

For one hour (60 minutes) I charge 60 Euros, 45 Euros for 45 minutes. Sessions can be extended to 2 hours. Here, the price is 90 Euros, with 10 minutes break.

Personal encounters start from one hour. In this case, I recommend longer ones, based on good preparation. Preparation and wrap-up of sessions are included. Every meeting is followed by an email summing up the results and looking at the next step.
